Area hikers, mountain bikers to have a new rail trail in southeast Kansas

A new rail trail will open up between Iola and Humboldt, Kansas.

It's called Southwind Rail Trail and was built on old rail trails by volunteers who like to ride bicycles on them.

It's located near Riverside Park in Iola and connects Prairie Spirit Trail that runs from Iola to Ottawa.

Officials say it's for anyone to enjoy.

"So this gives the community, bikers, the hikers, walkers, runners, to get out and experience out in the country and get some good fresh air in their lungs," says trail manager John Fontaine.

The trail's grand opening is set for 2 p.m. on June 8, at the junction of the Southwind and Prairie Spirit Rail Trails on Bruner Street northeast of the Iola football fields.
