Authorities release the identity of a man found dead in Shoal Creek

Updated June 3, 2013 at 4:20 PM CST:  Newton County officials say Charles Oakes, 51, apparently drowned over the weekend but the cause of death won't be confirmed until an autopsy is performed.

That autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.

Canoeists found the body Sunday in Shoal Creek.

Chief Deputy Chris Jennings says the statements from three friends who were with Oakes differ on what happened, perhaps because they might have been intoxicated.  However, authorities do not suspect foul play.
