Freeman Hospital West opens new kitchen and cafeteria

Updated:

Freeman Hospital West is transforming the stigma on hospital food by opening a brand new kitchen and cafeteria.

The serving space is five times the size of what the hospital previously had.

Everything from healthy food like salads and sandwiches to comfort food like a hamburger, fries, and pizza is offered.

The new space took 14 months to build and cost $1 million.

Hospital officials says its new kitchen technology helps keep its focus on providing healthy food options.

"One big change we have made is all of our french fries and fried food is prepared in a convi oven that combines steam and convection cooking and gives you the feeling of a fried food but it's not - doesn't use any oils at all - so we are really excited about our new french fries," says Debi Koelkebeck, Vice President of Retail Service Operations.

The kitchen is open 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. and hospital officials invite the public to come have a taste.
