Safer crosswalks near Pitt State University

Updated:

A new hybrid beacon is going up at a busy crosswalk near the Pittsburg State University campus.

The new signal is being installed at Potlitzer and Broadway, a crosswalk many students use.

Bill Beasley, Director of Public Works for the City of Pittsburg, says the signal will be dark and will flash yellow after a person pushes a button to cross, then it will turn red.

Officials say this is needed because it is sometimes difficult for drivers to see the pedestrians trying to cross.

"It's easy to miss the student crossing, especially when one car is stopped in the inside lane or the outside lane and another car comes up beside him," Beasley said.  "You can't always tell why they're stopped."

It will cost about $7800, but is less expensive than a full traffic light system.

The city and the university will each pay half the cost.

The plan is to have it fully installed by the end of the month.
