Scottish Highland Games in Joplin

The 4th annual Scottish Highland Games are held in Joplin for the strong to show off their skills in a traditional way.

The all day event held at Field of Dreams,  had nine events including two stone throws, two hammer events and the Caber Toss which involves throwing a large telephone pole like log as far as you can.

There were divisions for men and women, one for light weights and for lads and lasses between the ages of 14 and 17. The games date back before the Olympics and one of the best parts about it is showing off skills while wearing traditional clan kilts.

"I like to compete as I get older and go on as a bigger guy this is a sport I'm kind of built for, unlike running or anything like that which just I'm not built for but picking up heavy things I can do that" says athletic director Joey Grieshaber.

Organizers say that these competitions are held all across the U.S. and are most commonly done in the Midwest region.
