Construction underway to widen several Joplin streets

Updated:

Construction work is underway to widen several major Joplin streets, hopefully easing traffic congestion.

On Wednesday crews were digging a trough for power supplies being moved on 26th Street.  It's being widened to add a turn lane.

Work to widen Schifferdecker to five lanes is also getting started.  Maiden Lane will also be widened to five lanes.

City officials say other additions will add safety.

"Reason for additional footage, not only put in turn lanes, we're putting bike lanes on both sides, we're putting in sidewalks on both sides for pedestrian and bicycle traffic, we're placing the curb and gutter there and adding more storm conduits to handle storm water flow we have," says Assistant Public Works Director Jack Schaller.

Schaller says handling  increased traffic can spur economic development along all the corridors under construction.

Most of the Schifferdecker property was purchased long ago.  Homeowners on 26th Street are being compensated for losing up to 14 feet of property on the north side.
