Joplin runners takes part in relay across America - "One Run For Boston"

Updated:

It's the first ever non-stop running relay across America.  Runners participating in the "One Run for Boston" started on June 7 in Los Angeles and are running day and night to get to Boston by the 30th of this month.

The relay made its way through southwest Missouri early Thursday morning.

Joplin runner Ken Schramm participated in the Boston Marathon this year and is now running for Boston in relay.  He says the 10 mile route was meaningful but easy.

"You just concentrate on your step and your pace and that's just the normal part of it," says Schramm.

Just east of Granby, Schramm passed the baton to fellow Joplin runner, Shaun Steele, who made the journey to Monett.

Steele says music helps keep him going.

"Just a little running - a little Beastie Boys, little Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly, a couple Boston bands," says Steele.

There are over 1,000 participants running in the relay.  Seventeen of the 300 stages are here in the Four State area.

All money from the event will benefit those most affected by the Boston Marathon bombings.

"And the great thing is that because each runner is making a donation to the one fund when they do sign up, we have raised nearly $60,000 so far," says relay organizer Kate Treleaven.  "That $60,000 will be donated to the one fund which is going to be then given out to those who most need it, those people who were effected by the bombings, so those who need to pay for medical care or ongoing help for the rest of their lives."

Treleaven helped organize the event with a couple of friends and did so from England.

"It's an idea that we had but it almost has a life of its own now," says Treleaven.  "Runners are coming to sign up and they are taking responsibility for it.  They are organizing things around it, we just imagined one runner handing off to another runner, but we are turning up at hand-offs and we are seeing whole families come along and it's just the most incredible thing for us to see."

As the baton makes it's way on the 3,000 mile trek to Boston, runners like Jeremy Tignor are glad to have an opportunity to make a difference.

"Being a part of something that's bigger than you are by yourself and knowing that - I don't know - this is the first time it has ever been done, that runners from all across America have joined together and ran from Los Angeles to Boston, what a great cause," says Tignor.

You can track the progress of the relay through a live map and also make a donation to the fund by visiting http://www.onerunforboston.org/.
