Baxter Springs weekend ceremony retires American flags

Updated:

A ceremony in Baxter Springs, Kansas on Saturday honored American flags.

More than 50 flags were brought to be retired.

Veterans and the public gathered to see the flags burned in a pit.  The sacred spot has been placed at the community's cultural center in Baxter.

Commanders examined each flag to be sure it could be placed into the fire.

Organizers say this is the proper way to dispose an old flag.

"When you say 'burn a flag' it brings a bad connotation to their minds but yet on the other hand we have a fire pit that has been blessed and cleansed and this is the proper way to retire a flag," says organizer Ray Golden.

The event was held to bring awareness to the tradition.
