Pittsburg residents to vote on a proposed sales tax increase

Updated:

Pittsburg residents will vote in September on a proposed half-cent sales tax increase to help fund police and fire operations.

A city commission vote to put the issue up for a citywide vote.

Police Chief Mendy Hulvey says her department is understaffed and the city "sorely needs" a narcotics unit.

Commissioners asked City Manager Daron Hall to come up with a solution.  That's when Hall formed a safety advisory board with 20 members from the community.

The board then presented a recommendation of a half cent sales tax increase.

The vote is set for September 17.
