Area Agency on Aging turns to fundraising to help keep food programs going

Updated:

Budget cuts have forced the Area Agency on Aging to try fundraising to keep its food programs going.

Homebound meal deliveries in Joplin took a blow from the federal government sequestration, cutting funds for 7,000 meals a year.  There's now a waiting list.

That's compounded by an increase in the number of people coming to the senior centers, along with higher food and gas prices.

Plus, Missouri's governor is withholding $440,000 from agencies statewide waiting to see if the legislature overrides his veto of a tax break bill.

"We're just trying to be proactive and said, you know, that we're not going to wait on the federal government, not going to wait on the state, let's just get out and get the community behind us and support the seniors," says Stan Heater, CEO of the Area Agency on Aging.

The Grapes and Grog Dinner and Silent Auction fundraiser will be held August 10 at the Joplin Elks Club from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.  There will be wine tasting, beer and BBQ.  Attendees must be 21 or older.  It's $20 per person for all you can eat and drink.  For more information visit www.facebook.com/aaaregionx or call 417-781-7562.
