Volunteers 'throw' clay bowls in preparation for Empty Bowl fundraiser

Updated:

Phoenix Fired Art began making the bowls on Thursday for this year's Empty Bowl 2013 Bowl-A-Thon.

The organization is partnered with the Salvation Army for the second annual fundraising event.

About 40 volunteers and students have 12 hours to make as many bowls as they can with the goal of finishing 1,000 bowls.

The actual fundraiser will take place in November.

You can buy a bowl for a minimum donation of $15 and pick from a variety of soups from area restaurants to fill your bowl with.

"We're adding some additional restaurant sponsors because we ran out of soup last year and people got the real 'empty bowl' experience," says Heather Grills, the owner and executive director of Phoenix Fire Art.

Last year's event raised about $12,000 and sold 500 bowls.

Organizers hope to raise $20,000 this year.

If you would like to purchase one of the bowls contact Phoenix Fired Art at 417-437-9281.
