Detours end early, as Interstate 44 ramps reopen at Rangeline. All ramps on the new diamond interchange at the popular intersection reopened at around 2:30 this afternoon, earlier than planned, because workers were able to close the ramps Friday night instead of Saturday.
Detours had sent drivers down 32nd Street to Main, where the left turn lane grew long and traffic congested. Both drivers and MODOT say the detours caused some extra strain on motorists that has been resolved through the reopening of the ramps.
"Since the ramps are closed, I think I've seen a lot more traffic out here at 32nd and Main," says Joplin resident Richard Bowlin.
Joplin resident Shane Upton adds, "Because of all the road construction going on, I've been taking back roads everywhere I go."
MODOT spokesman Bob Edwards says, "It's good because we want the public to be able to use this road, and the quicker we can get it open after a major piece of work like this, the better."
Although the diamond interchange portion of the project is complete, further construction will continue in the area until December.
