Quapaw man who plead guilty to Galena bank robbery gets 5 years; ordered to pay restitution

Updated November 25, 2013:  Authorities tell us a Quapaw, Oklahoma man who had plead guilty to robbing a bank in Galena, Kansas has been sentenced to serve 5 years in prison.

Officials say Thomas Hass was arrested for the robbery of a branch of the American Bank in Galena on July 22.  Hass was arrested within days of surveillance photos being released.

Earlier this month Hass was sentenced to 60 months and ordered to pay $20,262 in restitution.

 

Updated September 10, 2013:  On Monday an Oklahoma man plead guilty to robbing a branch of the American Bank in Galena, Kansas on July 22.

The crime was captured on surveillance camera.  Authorities say the robber requested a loan application, then pulled a gun and demanded money.

The weapon turned out to be a pellet gun that shot rubber pellets.

Thomas Hass, 44 of Quapaw, Oklahoma, was arrested within days after surveillance photos from a nearby convenience store brought tips from the public.

Hass could get up to 20 years in prison when he's sentenced in November.

 

Updated July 29, 2013 at 3:45 PM CST:  Thomas Hass of Quapaw, Oklahoma has been charged with one count of bank robbery in the robbery of American Bank in Galena, Kansas.

According to court documents on July 22 the suspect entered the American Bank and asked for a loan application.  After receiving the application and placing it in a laptop style case the suspect withdrew a semi-automatic handgun and yelled for the tellers to give him their money.  Bank employees say the suspect then fled the area on foot.

With the description of the suspect law enforcement personnel reviewed surveillance video from area businesses.  A man matching the suspect's description was located on footage from a Casey's convenience store.

On July 25 the surveillance photos were released to the news media.  In the early morning hours of July 26 law enforcement received two calls from individuals saying they had seen the photographs on the news and identified the suspect as Hass.

In one of the calls authorities were told Hass had approached a female associate, saying he had obtained a large amount of money and wanted to take her to Las Vegas.

Hass is now in custody and has been charged with bank robbery.

 

 

Updated July 29, 2013 at 12:00 PM CST:  A man suspected of robbing a Galena bank last week is in custody. That's according to Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves.

The identity of the suspect has yet to be released.

The suspect is in federal custody.

 

Updated July 25, 2013 at 8:40 PM CST - NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE CHEROKEE COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE:

During the course of the investigation into the armed bank robbery, which occurred in Galena on Monday, July 22, 2013, additional photographs have been discovered of the suspect prior to robbing the bank.

Investigators have also come to believe the suspect was driving a 1999 -2002 model year Pontiac Firebird.  The vehicle is navy blue in color, although it looks darker in the surveillance photographs attached.  The vehicle also does not have a front license plate or T-Tops.  The vehicle also does have a spoiler on the trunk.

The suspect is described as a Caucasian male, 5'06, 150 pounds, 30-40 years of age

Updated July 23, 2013 at 11:10 AM CST:  Authorities say the tips are coming in but they still have not located the suspect who robbed the American Bank in Galena, Kansas on Monday.

Surveillance video shows the suspect wearing black boots, black jeans, sunglasses, and a black cowboy hat.

Officers say the suspect should be considered armed and dangerous.

Witnesses say he smelled of alcohol.

Authorities say the suspect entered the American Bank shortly before noon on noon.  Investigators are not releasing how much money was taken, if any, but do say no one was hurt.

 

Updated July 22, 2013 at 1:58 PM CST:  The robbery occurred at American Bank in Galena.  Authorities say the suspect was last seen on foot on 7th Street in Galena.

Law enforcement is looking for the suspect in the photo. Suspect is wanted in connection with an armed bank robbery in Galena earlier today. He was last seen on foot on 7th Street. He is reported to be armed. Appears to be wearing black boots, black jeans, grey / green long sleeve shirt, sunglasses and black cowboy hat. Residents should not approach the suspect, but are asked to contact the Cherokee County Sheriff's at 620-429-3992, 620-848-3000 ir the Galena Police Department at 620-783-1900 with any information.
