Flash flood slows, but doesn't stop Crawford County Fair

Updated:

Many across the Four States were pelted with rain over the past 24 hours causing flooding and flash flooding in many communities.

The annual Crawford County Fair in Girard, Kansas (on Facebook) was supposed to start Tuesday night and families had already started to make preparations at the grounds when the flash flooding hit.

Around 100 RV campers were already parked on the grounds.  According to the county rains caused a nearby creek to raise three feet overnight.  Crews worked to move as many of the campers as they could to high ground, but about 20 of the trailers were flooded and destroyed.

"It wasn't worth it for somebody to get hurt or somebody to get caught in that swift waters, it was running real swift," says Crawford County Emergency Manager Eldon Bedene.

Girard Mayor Kurt Ziegler was one of those whose camper sustained damage.

"We got inundated with a lot of water and a lot of flow," says Mayor Ziegler.  "See the silt - this is the stuff that will have to be cleaned, our neighbors over there already have their vinyl coming up."

"It was sad, we've been working since the last fair on trying to get exhibits put together, and events put together for Crawford County," says Kari West, an organizer with the Crawford County Fair Association.

Again, the fair was supposed to kickoff Tuesday at 6 p.m. with an Open Horse Show, but that event has been canceled.

Fair organizers say everything else is still on as scheduled.

"Try and get some things figured out and move forward with plans, and maybe just a little bit of modification, but hopefully with this rain, it's brought some cooler weather for us," says West.

And Mayor Ziegler says it's good the flash flood happened with enough to pick up the pieces before the fair is set to begin.

"Just like you would in a house, or anything else, it's flooded, we want to try and dry it out, and if it's salvageable, we'd like to keep our camper, if not we'll do something different," says Ziegler.

Officials say nobody was hurt.

"Campers are material items and they can be replaced, but lives can't, so we're blessed that nothing happened," says West.  "We're blessed nothing happened to anybody when the flooding came through, and for those that have had a challenge, there is lots of support here and lots of folks trying to help out."

According to the owners of the campers we spoke with the flood levels reached as high as their tail lights.

The Crawford County Fair runs through August 3.
