Homeless count held in southwest Missouri - KOAM TV 7

Homeless count held in southwest Missouri

Updated:

Across the state of Missouri agencies are hoping to get a head count of those without shelter.

The count is conducted twice a year and the effort shows help agency representatives the real circumstances of homeless people.

Teams of five or more set out to sites in both north and south Joplin on Wednesday.  We followed Tammy Walker of Economic Security Corporation into an area known to have homeless campers.  There we found a man who answers questions about his situation.  Other camps are found in woods behind Range Line businesses.

Coalition leaders say it's important for funding and planning to know how many are homeless.

"Our hope is to reach out give them information so they know where in town they can go and seek services if they want them, as well as just for our benefit to know how many people are unsheltered so that we can plan to try to get them housed," says Walker.

In conjunction with the statewide count groups held the Homeless Connect.  That's where they could get free products, backpacks, haircuts, medical services and learn about services and programs to help them find housing or education opportunities.

It will take about six weeks to compile the information gathered during the homeless count which included all local shelters and soup kitchens on Wednesday.
