PSU to Defer Blevins' Induction into Athletics Hall of Fame

Updated:

Press Release Pittsburg State University

Pittsburg State University officials announced today (Aug. 8) the school will defer the induction of Dina (Wathan) Blevins into its Athletics Hall of Fame per Blevins' request.

Blevins was selected along with six other individuals among the Class of 2013 for the PSU Athletics Hall of Fame in May. Dina and her husband, Nate, are expecting the birth of their first child at the same time as the Nov. 2 Hall of Fame Ceremonies.

A Blue Springs, Mo., native Blevins enjoyed a record-breaking career as an outside hitter on the Pitt State volleyball squad from 2000-03. She became the first Pitt State player to earn All-America honors as a senior in 2003 when she helped lead the Gorillas to their first NCAA post-season appearance. Blevins set eight PSU records, including career kills (1814), career service aces (158) and career digs (2326). Her career digs total still ranks second in NCAA Division II history.

"Dina contacted us earlier this week to ask about the possibility of deferring her induction by a year as she and Nate prepare for the birth of their first child," PSU Athletics Hall of Fame chair Dan Wilkes said. "Our athletic department staff, as well as the university administration, certainly is supportive of this alternative. Dina's health and the health of her child should be the paramount concern and focus. We'll look forward to honoring Dina as a member of the Class of 2014."

The remaining six members of the Class of 2013 — former football star Aaron McConnell (2000-03), cross country/track & field All-American Jeanette (Mott) Owens (1998-2002), track & field standout Vern Akins (1939-41), meritorious achievement honorees Frank Crespino and Chuck Shelton and former football coach Charles H. Morgan (1934-48) — will be enshrined into the PSU Athletics Hall of Fame in a special ceremony at 8:30 a.m. at the Overman Student Center on Nov. 2.  The group also will be recognized at halftime of the Gorillas football game against Northwestern Oklahoma State University later that afternoon.
