The PIttsburg State Volleyball team earned a 3.69 cumulative team GPA over the 2012-13 school year to be one of 77 NCAA Division II schools earning the AVCA Team Academic Award.
The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
622 university, junior college and high school men's and women's volleyball teams earned the award for the 2012-13 year. The Gorillas were one of only five MIAA teams to earn the award, with the others being Emporia State, Lindenwood, Truman and Central Missouri.
This marks the second year in a row Pitt State Volleyball has posted a 3.6 or higher cumulative team GPA, as the team had a 3.72 GPA in 2011-12.
The Gorillas will begin the 2013 season with their first practice on Wednesday, August 14. The annual community scrimmage and autograph day will be Saturday, August 24 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Pittsburg High School. The first match of the year will be Friday, September 6 against Southeastern Oklahoma State at 11:30 a.m. as part of the PItt State Classic hosted by the Gorillas in John Lance Arena.
