Iola teachers take part in poverty simulation

Updated:

SEK-CAP put on a poverty simulation on Tuesday at the Iola Middle School.  The goal of the simulation is to raise awareness and inspire people to take action.

SEK-CAP worked with Iola teachers and faculty on the challenges many of their students face and teaching the school staff how to relate with these children.

Participates were taken through a simulated month with limited income and resources and had to make ends meet.

Each was assigned a task such as going to work, figuring out child care and paying bills.

"Poverty effects the entire community," says Becky Gray of SEK-CAP.  "It's not just the individuals that are experiencing it, but it's also the school system, it's also the police force, it's a variety of entities throughout the community."

According to the most recent Census data 15% of the Southeast Kansas population lives at or below the poverty line.
