The Empire District Electric Company earns Energy Star Leadership in Housing Award

JOPLIN, MO – August 19, 2013 – Empire is proud to announce it has earned an ENERGY STAR Leadership in Housing Award for its ongoing commitment to provide home buyers with ENERGY STAR certified homes. The award recognizes Empire's work to promote energy efficient construction and help protect the environment through its partnership with ENERGY STAR.

Empire began offering ENERGY STAR programs for customers in 2006. Since that time, nearly 400 new homes have been constructed using the ENERGY STAR New Homes Program and more than 400 homeowners have utilized the Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program to make upgrades to existing homes in Empire's service area. Additional Empire programs include Low Income Weatherization and High Efficiency Central Air Conditioner Rebates which have assisted more than 1,400 and 2,100 customers, respectively.

Together, the utilization of these programs has resulted in estimated annual savings of more than 6 million kilowatt hours or nearly $600,000. Best of all, these savings continue over the life of the home.
