Baxter Springs hopes to bring more business Downtown

Updated:

It's been awhile since businesses have opened up in Baxter Springs, but business owners who are already in the city say it's a perfect place to start. Now the city's economic development committee is trying to take a new approach to bringing in more customers.

"It's a caring community. It's a wonderful place to have a business. I never thought it be actually this good." says Baxter Springs business owner, Sue Gast.

Downtown Baxter springs is relatively calm, and while businesses seem to come and go...some are here to stay.

"Baxter Springs being in the center of the country, and Route 66 had a great attraction for a small town feel. But close enough to the bigger cities. Close enough to Joplin, but close enough to Kansas City and Tulsa." she says.

While little progress has been made in economic development...officials think looking at ways other towns run could help bring ideas.

"it's important that we don't just live in an island. We have to connect with other economic development activities going on in the region." Economic Development Director of Baxter Springs, Gregg Motley says.

Sue Gast has owned Angels on the Route for 8 years, and has seen people from all over the world come into her shop..including these two, traveling from Hungary. The constant customers coming into her store remind her that there is a bright side to the down economy.

"There are a lot of positive things...different businesses have gone in, and just looking for more businesses. There's a lot of opportunities. Real estate is inexpensive on Military here, and there's a lot of potential." she says.
