Overnight Standoff in Galena lands fugitive in hospital

Updated:

The hunt for a fugitive on the run results in an overnight standoff Saturday in Galena.

An operation involving multiple law enforcement agencies lands a suspect in the hospital.

Galena Police Department confirms Jerry Short Jr. was on the run and received multiple tips from several agencies that he may be in the Galena area.

Officials say Short was wanted on several felony warrants in Jasper, Newton and Cherokee counties.

The chase began around 11 p.m. Police say he was hiding in the attic of the complex along Schemerhorn Road and would not cooperate.

The Cherokee County Sheriff's Department along with Joplin Police and Joplin SWAT team had to use several cans of tear gas to enter the apartment.

Cherokee County EMS transported short to the hospital, where he remains before being taken into custody in Jasper County.

We will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.
