Authorities in Kansas search for a man who they say shot and wounded a law enforcement officer on the Labor Day Holiday.

Gunfire erupts after a traffic stop on U.S. Highway 54.

Butler County Sheriff Kelly Herzet says Jan Kilbourne is the man who shot one of his deputies early Monday morning.

Kilbourne, 41, was one of three people pulled over on a warrant check.

According to the report, when the deputy returned to the vehicle Kilbourne stepped out and fired at the deputy, striking him in the shoulder.  The deputy returned fire, hitting the suspect, who ran then off.

The other two people are in custody.

The sheriff says the deputy's bulletproof vest stopped the bullet from penetrating his skin.  He was released from the hospital and is now resting at home.

The department is working several leads in the case.

Authorities say Kilbourne is still at large and should be considered armed and dangerous.
