MIAA volleyball opens the season


Press Release MIAA Conference:

#8 Central Missouriheads towards Texas
Sept. 6: #8 UCM vs. Western New Mexico 11 a.m., #8 UCM vs. Minnesota-Crookston3 p.m.
Sept. 7: #8 UCM vs. Texas Woman's 1 p.m., #8 UCM vs. #23 Adams State 5 p.m.
#7 Central Missouri opens the season at the Hilltopper-Rattler Classic in SanAntonio, Texas for four matches. As a team in 2012 UCM was third in the leaguein kills and ranked fourth in the league in assists. The Jennies top returningattacker is Taylor Goodness who averaged 2.26 kills per set last season adding55 total blocks. Julia Bates averaged 10.49 assists per set last season as theteam's primary setter. Annie Reilly averaged 4.88 digs per set to lead the teamlast season.

Central Oklahoma heads to Arkansas to open week one
Sept. 6: UCO vs. Alabama-Huntsville 12 p.m., UCO vs. Cameron 4 p.m.
Sept. 7: UCO vs. Henderson State 11 a.m.; UCO vs. Southern Arkansas 3p.m. 
Central Oklahoma will open the 2013 campaign away from home at the HendersonState Invitational. The Bronchos were the MIAA's top blocking team last seasonaveraging 2.35 blocks per set. Barbara Jackson is the squads top returningattacker after averaging 2.24 kills per set during the 2012 season. At setterTaylyn Schwartz will be in her first season for the Bronchos after racking up1,357 assists at Fort Scott. Defensively Tate Hardaker averaged 5.14 digs perset last season.

Emporia State opens 2013 in Texas
Sept. 6: ESU vs. Northwestern Oklahoma State 2 p.m., ESU vs. McMurry 6p.m. 
Sept. 7: ESU vs. Southern Nazarene 11 a.m.; ESU vs. Southwestern Oklahoma State3 p.m.
Emporia State opens 2013 on the road in Texas at the MSU classic. The Hornetswere both third in the league in assists and blocks in 2012. ESU's topreturning attacker is Paige Vanderpool who averaged 2.74 kills per set on theyear. Katie Deutschmann averaged 6.30 assists and 2.13 kills per set. Ondefense Alyssa Gibbs and Kelly Holden will look to replace the MIAA's secondbest digger in Meg Schwartz.

Fort Hays State opens the year in Hawaii 
Sept. 5: FHSU vs. Chaminade 7 p.m.; Sept. 6 FHSU vs. #5 BYU-Hawaii 7:30 p.m.
Sept. 7: FHSU vs. Lewis 12 p.m., FHSU vs. Hawaii Pacific 6 p.m.
Fort Hays State will take a trip into the ocean to face off with the HawaiiInvitational. The Tigers were second in the league in blocking last yearaveraging 2.21 blocks per set. Jenna Ulrich returns after leading the team inkills with 2.61 per set while hitting .311 and averaging 1.28 blocks per set.Rachel Parsons and Libby Ary will look to replace Kayla Zoglman at setter.Makenzie Weinman led the team on defense with 4.50 digs per set.

Lindenwood travels to LaQuinta Kickoff Classic 
Sept. 6: LWU vs. Arkansas Tech 9 a.m., LWU vs. Northern State 3 p.m.
Sept. 7: LWU vs. St. Cloud State 3 p.m., LWU at Drury 7 p.m.
Lindenwood opens the year on the road in Springfield, Mo. The Lions wereseventh in the league in digs and service aces in 2012. Their top returningattacker is Kayla Guyot who averaged 2.45 kills per set last year. Emma Brydelsaveraged 9.58 assists per set last year.

Missouri Southern crosses border to face off in Pittsburg State Invite
Sept. 6: MSSU vs. Quincy 9:30 a.m., MSSU vs. Ouachita Baptist 2:30 p.m.
Sept. 7: MSSU vs. Southeastern Oklahoma State 10 a.m., MSSU vs. Rockhurst 3p.m.
Missouri Southern will cross over the state line for the Pittsburg StateInvitational. New interim Head Coach Rachel Kirkman will lead the team into theseason. Katie Politte led the team on the attack with 2.70 kills per set and2.43 digs per set. Abby Finder returns at setter where she averaged 5.80assists per set.

Missouri Western opens the year at Pittsburg State
Sept. 6: MWSU vs. Rockhurst 12 p.m., MWSU vs. Quincy 4:30 p.m. 
Sept. 7: MWSU vs. Ouachita Baptist 1 p.m., MWSU at PSU 5 p.m.
Missouri Western opens the season on the road at the Pittsburg State Tournament.On the attack MWSU returns Jessie Thorup who averaged 2.38 kills per set.Stephanie Hattey averaged 5.70 assists and 2.11 kills per set in 2012. BrookeCousino led the way on defense averaging 3.50 digs per set on the year.

#3 Nebraska-Kearney opens the year at home
Sept. 6: #3 UNK vs. William Jewell 12 p.m., #3 UNK vs. Chadron State 8p.m. 
Sept. 7: #3 UNK vs. Black Hills State 12 p.m., #3 UNK vs. South Dakota Schoolof Mines 6 p.m.
#3 Nebraska-Kearney will begin their MIAA title defense at home as they host anearly tournament. UNK led the MIAA in four offensive categories last season.Their top returning attacker is Katie Sokolowski who averaged 3.15 kills perset. Defensivley for the Lopers Liz McGowan had 5.02 digs per set.

Northwest Missouri heads north to open the year
Sept. 6: NWMSU vs. Minnesota State-Moorehead 1:15 p.m., NWMSU at Winona State5:30 p.m.
Sept. 7: NWMSU vs. St. Joseph's 1:15 p.m., NWMSU vs. Upper Iowa 5:30 p.m.
Northwest Missouri will hit the road for Winona State to take part in theirseason opening tournament. Brooke Bartosh is their top returning attacker afteraveraging 3.06 kills per set. Bridget Hanafin returns to the offense afteraveraging 6.63 assists per set. The Bearcats must replace, however, theleague's top defensive player in Tori Beckman who averaged 6.02 digs per set.

Pittsburg State opens the season at home
Sept. 6: PSU vs. SE Okla. St. 11:30 a.m., PSU vs. Ouachita Baptist 6:30 p.m.
Sept. 7: PSU vs. Rockhurst 11 a.m., PSU vs. MWSU 5 p.m.
Pittsburg State open 2013 at home for four matches at the PSU Classic. Theirtop attacker returns in Crystal Whitten who averaged 2.66 kills per set.Christa McCaw is their top returning defender after averaging 2.55 digs per setlast season.

Southwest Baptist opens season at Henderson State
Sept. 6: SBU at Henderson St. 2 p.m., SBU vs. Southern Ark. 6 p.m.
Sept. 7: SBU vs. Cameron 1 p.m., SBU vs. A&M-Commerce 3 p.m.
Southwest Baptist will head south to Arkansas to open their year. They returntheir top attacker in Jordan Nedbalek who averaged 2.08 kills per set. Ondefense they return Kaitlyn Allison who averaged 3.96 digs per set in 2012.

#7 Washburn opens the season at Ferris State
Sept. 6: #7 WU vs. Cedarville 10:30 a.m., #7 WU vs. Ashland 3:30 p.m.
Sept. 7: #7 WU vs. Cal (PA) 9:30 a.m., #7 WU at Ferris St. 2:30 p.m.
#7 Washburn begins the 2013 season on the road at the Ferris StateInvitational. Washburn was second in the league in four offensive categories.Their top returning attacker is Marissa Cox who is averaged 2.38 kills per set.Setter Abby Wittman averaged 9.28 assists per set last season. DefensivelyCourtney Churchman averaged 3.97 digs per set.
