Rebuild Joplin tears down a home

Updated:

Updated at 5:15 PM CST:  Rebuild Joplin works to build homes devastated by the 2011 tornado.

But on Thursday the organization tore down one home to make way for a fresh start.  The home demolition began at 11 a.m. on Thursday.

The owner of the home has spent the time since the tornado living inside the home and applied for help from Rebuild Joplin.

The organization determined that it was best to first demolish the home and start from scratch.

"There's a combination of reasons," says Dorren Finnie of Rebuild Joplin.  "Quite often we run into people who didn't know help was available.  This client's been living in this house for two years amongst the devastation that it has become."

Rebuild Joplin says that several Disciples of Christ churches have banded together to fully fund the rebuilding of the home.

Posted September 5, 2013 at 11:21 AM CST:  On Thursday Rebuild Joplin had planned to hold a groundbreaking at a location on East 18th Street in Joplin.

But a scheduling conflict meant the original home, set to be demolished, was still standing, so Rebuild Joplin decided to hold a house razing instead.

We'll have more from organizers later today.
