Summer Camp for Newton and Barry County 4-H members is Out of this World

NEOSHO, Mo. – Thirty-one youth from Barry and Newton counties attended Southwest Missouri 4-H Summer Camp at Roaring River State Park this June. The camp theme was “Mission Space” and it was funded by a NASA grant.

Activities emphasized fun but covered topics as diverse as physics, chemistry, engineering and food. Attending 4-H members built rockets out of plastic bottles and pencils and created lunar gear. At the Clover Kids Camp, younger members made jet packs out of two-liter bottles and old seat belts.

Barry County 4-H members that attended the 4-H camp were Kaleb Tucker of Exeter, Jason Ball of Purdy, and Jesse, Rachel, Dylan and Erika Bridges of Washburn.

Teen counselors are used to help deliver the programs. As a counselor, teens are asked to take on responsibility for presenting workshops, helping support campers have fun and ensuring the safety of their groups.

Newton County teen counselors this year were Jacob Boeglin, Seneca, MO; Preston Farmer, Stark City, MO; Greg Vangunda, Seneca, MO; and Kyle Werner, Seneca, MO.

To learn more about 4-H and how to get involved locally go online to http://mo4h.missouri.edu or visit the Newton County University of Missouri Extension Center in Smith Hall on the Crowder College campus.
