Volleyball drops final two at Pitt State Invite

The MissouriSouthern volleyball team dropped its final two matches today in the last day ofthe Pittsburg State Invite, dropping a 3-1 match to Southeastern Oklahoma Stateand 3-0 to Rockhurst. 

In the firstset against SEOSU (2-1) the Lions won game one 25-21, but dropped the secondset 16-25. Southern had a 20-16 lead in the third set, forcing a timeout forthe Storm, but SEOSU faught back and scored nine of the next 11 points to winthe set 25-22. The Storm would win the fourth set 25-19. 

KatiePolitte led the Lions with 18 kills and nine digs in the match, while NaiMontano had ten kills and AbbyFinder added 35 assists. DanielleSeverns and SydneyWheeler had 15 and 11 digs, respectively. 

Rockhurst(4-0) continued its unbeaten streak in the tournament by taking out the Lionsin straight sets. Individual set scores were 6-25, 13-25, and 14-25. 

Politte hadeight kills and four digs in the match, while PaytonGraves and Montano added five kills each. MikaylaAvery had eight digs, while Wheeler added six of her own. 

The Lionswill be back in action next weekend when Southern will travel to theArkansas-Monticello Tournament. The Lions will face off with Kentucky Wesleyanand Arkansas-Monticello on day one, while taking on Union and Southern Arkansason day two.

    Crews Battle Vehicle Fire On Highway 69

    The Cherokee Township, Weir, and Galena Fire Departments fought a vehicle fire today (May 25) around 7:30 p.m. on Highway 69 near Highway 103. According to authorities a truck was heading south on 69 Highway when the vehicle started smoking. The truck was then completely engulfed by flames. The driver managed to escape the vehicle without any serious injury. Crews had the fire put out by 8:00 p.m. No word yet on what caused the truck to catch on fire.More >>
