The Pittsburg State University men's and women's cross country teams took to the course for the first time in 2013 Saturday, hosting the Gorillas annual Alumni Race at Countryside Golf Course.

The Gorillas used the meet tactically as preparation for the opening regular season competition in two weeks as well as to reconnect with former Pitt State athletes in a fun and competitive environment.

Senior Adam Volkert led the men's racers across the finish line in the six-kilometer race in 18 minutes, 43 seconds. Sophomore Austin Bogina was second in 19 minutes, 13 seconds and sophomore Chris Wise finished third in 19:25.  Daniel Craig led a large alumni contingent in 19:44.

For the Pitt State women, senior Jessica Macy paced the field in the four-kilometer race, crossing the line in 14 minutes, 14 seconds.

Senior Casey Epps and juniors Cate Dunn and Alex Moase all finished a second apart in just over 15 minutes, 11 seconds. Brittney Graff paced an equally large alumni group across the finish line in 16:26

The Gorillas will travel to Joplin, Mo., to officially open the season on Sept. 21 by competing in the challenging Missouri Southern Stampede.
