Abenoja Named MIAA Player of the Week, PSU Climbs to No. 16 in National Poll

Pittsburg State University junior quarterback Tony Abenoja was named the MIAA Offensive Player of the Week Monday (Sept. 10) for his efforts in the Gorillas' 45-6 season-opening victory over Northeastern State University Saturday (Sept. 7).

Abenoja accounted for 314 total yards and four touchdowns in leading No. 21 Pitt State past the RiverHawks. Abenoja completed 18 of 24 passes for 228 yards and three touchdowns and rushed the ball 11 times for 86 yards and a score. He led the Gorillas to scores on seven of their first nine possessions in the game and helped the offense finish the contest with 582 total yards. The 6-3 sophomore quarterback is a native of Overland Park, Kan., where he competed at Blue Valley High School.

Northwest Missouri State University senior cornerback Brandon Dixon won the MIAA Defensive Player of the Week honors, while Washburn University freshman placekicker Justin Linn received MIAA Special Teams Player of the Week accolades.

Gorillas Climb Five Spots to No. 16 in AFCA Top 25 Poll
Pitt State climbed five spots to No. 16 in the most recent AFCA NCAA Division II Top 25 Poll released Monday (Sept. 10). The Gorillas received 290 points in the poll.

Valdosta State University retained its place at No. 1 in the poll with a 36-21 victory over Fort Valley State University. Minnesota State University remained No. 2 while Northwest Missouri climbed one spot to No. 4. West Texas A&M University and Colorado State University-Pueblo round out the top five this week.

    Crews Battle Vehicle Fire On Highway 69

    The Cherokee Township, Weir, and Galena Fire Departments fought a vehicle fire today (May 25) around 7:30 p.m. on Highway 69 near Highway 103. According to authorities a truck was heading south on 69 Highway when the vehicle started smoking. The truck was then completely engulfed by flames. The driver managed to escape the vehicle without any serious injury. Crews had the fire put out by 8:00 p.m. No word yet on what caused the truck to catch on fire.More >>
