NEO announces Mike Sexton as the 2013 Award of Merit recipient

Miami, Okla. – Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2013 – Officials at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M (NE0) announced Mike Sexton as this year’s Award of Merit recipient.

Sexton will be honored during NEO’s homecoming festivities on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013. This year’s homecoming theme is “Fear the Norsemen.”

“Mike is a great ambassador for NEO A&M College and more than deserving of this honor,” said Jennifer Hessee, executive director of the NEO Development Foundation. “He brings an endless amount of passion for NEO and is always willing to give of his time to the college.”

Graduating from NEO in 1962 with an Associate of Arts degree, he went on to pursue his bachelor’s degree from Pittsburg State University. In 1981, he graduated from the University of Wisconsin School of Banking in Madison.

Sexton joined First National Bank and Trust Company of Miami in 1976 and today serves as Executive Vice President. He also served as manager of the B.F. Goodrich Employees Federal Credit Union from 1972-1976, plant accountant at Eagle Picher Research Lab from 1970-1972, and assistant cashier at American National Bank in Baxter Springs, Kan., from 1962-1970.

A familiar face on the campus of NEO, Sexton serves as a member of the NEO Community Athletic Advisory Committee. He is a member of the NEO Basketball Booster Club and the Golden Norseman Football Booster Club. Mike and his wife, Penny, have served as a host family for many seasons for members of the Lady Norse basketball team.

Sexton is also a great advocate of the NEO Agriculture Department. He has volunteered his time for the NEO rodeo and supports many fundraising events associated with the Ag Department. Most recently, he was named a committee member of the Synar Farm Improvement Campaign.

In addition to his volunteer efforts at NEO, Sexton has been very active in the Miami community. He currently serves as treasurer for the Miami Lions Club and the Lead Impacted Communities Relocation Assistance Trust and is a member of the Grand Lake Shrine Club, Miami Masonic Lodge No. 140, and Miami Elks Lodge. He is a former president of the Miami Chamber of Commerce, Miami Lions Club and the Ozark Playgrounds Chapter of the American Institute of Banking, as well as a past member of the NCUA Oklahoma Board of Directors and the Missouri State Committee - AIB.

Sexton has also received the Honorary Chapter FFA Degree and the Honorary State FFA Degree. He and his wife have two children and four grandchildren.

“I am honored to be named NEO’s Award of Merit winner, and I am appreciative of this recognition,” Sexton said. “I have a long history with NEO A&M College, and that makes this award extra special for me.”
