Carl Junction H. S. offer opportunity to earn college associates degree

Updated:

Carl Junction High School  students have the opportunity to get a jump start on college. In fact they'll be able to earn an associates degree  while in high school. The district is teaming up with Crowder college for the program.
Dual credit classes like college algebra will be part of the sixty-one hours a student needs to take. But some classes will need to be taken online or on the Crowder campus during summer sessions.
Counselors hope it will act as an incentive for students to try college credit classes.. But say earning the associates degree will take a devoted student.
"Taking four college level classes in each semester basically is what they would be doing.  And not every student who is involved in a lot of activities will be able to do that
and maintain a GPA and maintain that rigor.  But yeah, if a students willing to do that and able to do that its a win win," says  counselor Teresa Boyer.

Students say it's a time saver, cutting the years they'll spend in college and say there's a cost savings as well.

Senior Bryce Boyd who takes dual credit classes now says, " There's a major difference between costs per credit hour.  It seems like an expense you wouldn't have paid in high school normally, but  if you would have taken that same class after high school, it would have been much more expensive."

Crowder College is announcing a similar Jump Start program with Neosho High School tomorrow.
