Volleyball Hits the Road for Peggy Martin Classic

The Pittsburg StateVolleyball team will hit the road for the first time this season as they travelto Warrensburg, Mo. for the Peggy Martin Challenge hosted by Central Missourion Friday, September 13 and Saturday, September 14. 

Pitt State will face four quality teams in the two day tournament. Friday theGorillas will face 4-0 Minnesota State Moorhead at 9:30 a.m. and 3-1Colorado-Colorado Springs at 3:30 p.m. Saturday the team will meet No. 23Ferris State (3-1) at 9 a.m. and Winona State (2-2) at 3 p.m.

Pitt State went 0-4 in its opening weekend of play last weekend at the PIttState Classic. Though the team struggled, several individuals were able to puttogether bright performances to showcase the potential for the Gorillas as theseason progresses. 

Sophomore Crystal Whitten led the team with 4.00 kills per set and was third indigs with 2.92 dps. She recorded double-doubles in two of the four matches athad a season-high 17 kills against Southeastern Oklahoma. Fellow sophomoreHaylee Gregory lead teh team in blocks with 12 total for 1.00 bps. She had ateam-high four blocks against Ouachita Baptist and six against MissouriWestern. Junior Paula Okrutna was second in both kills (1.77 kps) and blocks(0.69 bps). Senior Jordan Rehm (4.92 dps) and freshman Taylor Wright (3.38 dps)led the team in digs. Rehm recorded double figures in digs in each of the fourmatches.

     Defending MIAA regular season champion Central Missouri has once again been selected by the coaches to finish atop the league earning ten first place votes. They are followed by Southwest Baptist who won the MIAA post-season tournament in overtime over Central Oklahoma who is picked two points behind them in third place after receiving a single first place vote.More >>
