A Very Larry Flynt Constitution Day at MSSU

JOPLIN, MO (SNS) – 2013 marks the 25th anniversary of the landmark free speech case, Hustler v. Falwell. In commemoration of Constitution Day, a feature film and discussion on the case will take place at Missouri Southern State University.

The 1996 film The People vs. Larry Flynt, starring Woody Harrelson and Edward Norton, will be shown at 6 p.m. on Sept. 17 in Phelps Theater in the lower floor of the Beimdiek Recreation Center.

A presentation by the political science faculty of MSSU will follow the movie.

There is no charge to attend. The movie and presentation are free and open to the public.

In the 1988 case, the United States Supreme Court held in a unanimous decision that the First Amendment’s free-speech guarantee prohibits awarding damages to public figures to compensate for emotional distress intentionally inflicted on them.

The case sprang from a magazine parody of nationally-known minister Rev. Jerry Falwell by Hustler magazine. Falwell had previously been awarded a judgment by a lower court.
