Lions defeat Union, 3-0, before power outage suspends second match with Southern Arkansas

The MissouriSouthern volleyball team got a 3-0 win over Union (Tenn.) in the first match ofthe day at the Arkansas-Monticello tournament today, but a campus-wide poweroutage caused the postponement of the second match against Southern Arkansasand the match will be resumed from the point of stoppage in the third set,November 3 at Missouri Southern. A time has yet to be set for the match. 

In the Lions(3-4) first match of the day, Southern dominated its opponent as they defeatedUnion by the scores of 25-14, 25-19 and 25-21. The Lions' defense was strong inthe match as big blocks dominated the match.

In Southern'ssecond match of the day, the Lions faced off with Southern Arkansas (6-3). TheLady Muleriders took sets one and two by scores of 25-23 and 28-26, and led 7-5in the third set, before the power went out.

KatiePolitte led all hitters with 11 kills in the match, while adding 11 digs,as well. SydneyWheeler had 17 assists in the match, playing in place of an injured AbbyFinder, who suffered an ankle injury in the match with Union.

The matchwith the Lady Muleriders will be resumed from the point of stoppage with SAUleading 7-5 in the third set on November 3 in Joplin. A start time has yet tobe determined. 

The Lionswill jump into MIAA play this week as Southern travels to seventh-rankedCentral Missouri on September 17 at 7 pm before playing host to NorthwestMissouri on September 21 at 6 pm in Young Gymnasium.

    Crews Battle Vehicle Fire On Highway 69

    The Cherokee Township, Weir, and Galena Fire Departments fought a vehicle fire today (May 25) around 7:30 p.m. on Highway 69 near Highway 103. According to authorities a truck was heading south on 69 Highway when the vehicle started smoking. The truck was then completely engulfed by flames. The driver managed to escape the vehicle without any serious injury. Crews had the fire put out by 8:00 p.m. No word yet on what caused the truck to catch on fire.More >>
