Volleyball falls, 3-1 to Northwest Missouri

The MissouriSouthern volleyball team dropped an MIAA match tonight as the Lions fell threesets to one in their home opener to Northwest Missouri. Individual set scoreswere 14-25, 17-25, 25-21, and 15-25. 

The Lions(3-6, 0-2 MIAA) ran into a hot-hitting Northwest (6-3, 2-1 MIAA) squad as theBearcats hit .378 as a team in the opening set to take care of business and win25-14. 

Northwest wonthe second set, this time by the score of 25-17, but the Lions hit .220 as ateam in the third set and led from nearly start to finish. A kill from KatiePolitte tied the set at 2-2 and an attack error on the Bearcats gave theLions a 3-2 lead in the frame and they wouldn't relinquish. Southern led by asmuch as 17-9 and Northwest would get as close as 23-21, but kills from Politteand PaytonGraves ended the set. 

The Bearcats,however, came back and hit .357 in the final set en route to a 25-15 win to capthe match. 

Politte ledthe Lions with 11 kills and nine digs, while AbbyFinder had 24 assists in her first game back from a short injury stint. DanielleSeverns had 13 digs, while MikaylaAvery had seven digs of her own. CallieWhetstone had seven blocks, while KrishnaMerriman added five of her own and the team had 11 total blocks in thematch. 

The Lionswill be back in action on Wednesday night, stepping out of MIAA play for amatchup at Drury. First-serve is set for 7 pm from Springfield.

(AP) - Oklahoma is adding two of the school's former athletes and NCAA champions to its wrestling coaching staff.Wrestling coach Mark Cody announced Tuesday that Andrew Howe has been hired as an assistant coach, while Kendric Maple will serve as a volunteer assistant coach.Howe is a four-time All-American, while Maple earned three All-American honors.
