Brown Named MIAA Special Teams Player of the Week

Pittsburg State University senior wide receiver/return specialist John Brown was named the MIAA Special Teams Player of the Week Monday (Sept. 23).

Brown (5-11, 170) returned the opening kickoff of the second half 95 yards for a touchdown to help spark a 28-point third quarter as No. 14 Pittsburg State rolled to a 59-7 victory over Southwest Baptist in front of 10,788 Family Day fans at Brandenburg Field/Carnie Smith Stadium.

The Homestead, Fla., native compiled 298 all-purpose yards in the game. He caught five passes for 171 yards and two touchdowns – all in the first half against the Bearcats. Brown also had one rush for 11 yards.

Emporia State quarterback Brent Wilson earned MIAA Offensive Player of the Week, while Washburn linebacker Bryce Atagi garnered MIAA Defensive Player of the Week recognition.

    A 19-year-old pleaded guilty today (Sept. 24, 2018) to second degree burglary after breaking into a Joplin bar. On December 18th, 2017, Joplin Police responded to Equality Rocks Bar (532 S. Joplin) for a motion alarm from inside the business. Authorities say an officer heard banging from inside the business as other officers arrived and surrounded the building.     The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the crash happened on September 18th, 2018 around 7:30 a.m. about 1/2 mile east of Carthage. According to the report, 66-year-old Mark Brewer was driving a Toyota Camry on E.Chestnut St. when he rear-ended a John Deer tractor. The tractor ran off the right side of the roadway. Brewer was flown to Mercy Hospital in Springfield where he died from his injuries on September 21st. Brewer's passenger, Julie Winter, was taken to Mercy Hospita...
