Volleyball drops tough five-setter at Drury

The MissouriSouthern volleyball team lost a tough five set match tonight at Drury by thescore of three sets to two. Individual set scores were 25-27, 25-23, 15-27,29-27 and 13-15. 

The Lions(3-7) were led offensively by KatiePolitte as the junior had a double-double with 23 kills and 12 digs, whilehitting .295 in the match. AbbyFinder dished out 53 assists and added 12 digs of her own to score adouble-double, while CallieWhetstone had 16 kills and hit .370. PaytonGraves and KrishnaMerriman both had 11 kills, while SydneyWheeler and DanielleSeverns had nine and eight digs, respectively. 

Drury (6-6)had three with double-figure kills, led by 16 from Sara Borneman. BrookeAntenen had 48 assists, while Brooke Foster had 19 digs. 

In a matchthat saw 40 tied scores and 15 lead changes, neither team won two sets in arow. The Lions raced out to a 6-1 lead in the first set, but Drury would fightback to tie the set at 13 and lead 16-13, forcing a Southern timeout. The Lionstied the set at 21 and again at 22, before the Panthers scored two straight toforce set point and another Lions' timeout. The set was again tied at 24 and25, but Drury scored the final two points to take the set. 

Both teamstraded points in the second set, with Drury leading by four (16-12) midwaythrough the set. The Panthers led again by four (21-17), forcing a Southerntimeout, and the Lions would respond. Southern scored eight of the final ninepoints in the set to win. 

The fourthset was all Drury as the Panthers won 25-15, never trailing in the set. Bothteams traded points in the fourth set, before the Lions scored two points onDrury errors to win 29-27. Southern led 13-9 in the fourth set, but thePanthers scored six points in a row to take the match. 

The Lions hit.224 in the match and had nine total team blocks. Southern will be back inaction this Friday evening as the Lions play host to Southwest Baptist at 7 pmin Young Gym.

    Crews Battle Vehicle Fire On Highway 69

    The Cherokee Township, Weir, and Galena Fire Departments fought a vehicle fire today (May 25) around 7:30 p.m. on Highway 69 near Highway 103. According to authorities a truck was heading south on 69 Highway when the vehicle started smoking. The truck was then completely engulfed by flames. The driver managed to escape the vehicle without any serious injury. Crews had the fire put out by 8:00 p.m. No word yet on what caused the truck to catch on fire.More >>
