Volleyball To Play First Conference Matches at Home

The Pittsburg State Volleyball team will host No. 13 Washburn (11-3, 1-0 MIAA) and Emporia State (7-3, 1-1 MIAA) in the first conference home matches of the 2013 season on Friday, September 27 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, September 28 at 3 p.m. in John Lance Arena. 

Washburn is currently third in the conference standings. Marissa Cox, the most recent MIAA Hitter of the Week, leads the team with 3.85 kills per set and a .346 attack percentage. She also adds 1.1 blocks per set and is third on the team with 30 total blocks on the season. Leanna Willer is another Washburn player averaging more the 3.00 kps at 3.02. She is second on the team with 13 aces and averages almost three digs per set with 2.94. Abby Wittman runs the offense from the setter position with 10.38 assists per set. She leads the team in service aces with 23 on the year and adds 3.55 dps and was last week's MIAA Specialist of the Week. Sarah Vicory is the leading the team in blocks with 42 on the season. Kelsey Lewis leads the team in digs with 3.55 dps.

Washburn hits .208 as a team with 13.40 kps while holding opponents to a .146 attack percentage and 11.13 kps. The team gets 18.94 dps, compared to 15.74 dps for opponents. Blocking is close between Washburn and opponents as the team has 104.0 on the year for 1.96 bps, while opponents have 103.5 for 1.95 bps.

Emporia State is currently seventh in the MIAA. The Hornets have a .212 team attack percentage with 12.7 kps. The team records 14.9 dps, while opponents are able to get 15.1 dps. Blocking is Emporia State's forte, as the team has 85 total blocks on the season with 2.2 bps while allowing opponents only 1.8 bps.

Five Hornet players average 2.00 kps or more and are lead by Josie Williams with 2.64 kps. Williams also adds 1.67 dps. Carly Spicer os second on the team with 2.33 kps, while Paige Vanderpool adds 2.18, Katie Deutschmann, 2.05 and Courtney Haring, 2.03. Vanderpool is second on the team in digs with 2.95 dps. Haring leads the team in blocks with 42. Kelly Holden is the teams digs leader with 4.51 dps. Macki Pankratz and Sydney Hartman share setting responsibilities. Pankratz averages 5.59 aps, while Hartman averages, 4.54 aps.

Pittsburg  State is just below Emporia State in the MIAA standings. The team is hitting at a .144 clips with 11.6 kps while allowing opponents a .167 attack percentage and 12.9 kps. The Gorillas have been strong than opponents defensively with 17.9 dps to 16.9 for opponents. Pitt State has also put down 78 blocks on the season for 2.2 bps, while opponents have only 58.0 blocks for 1.6 bps. 

Crystal Whitten continues a strong sophomore campaign with 4.19 kps and is second on the team with 2.89 kps. She also shares the team lead in aces with seven. Senior Abbie Smith is second on the team with 2.00 kps. Hayley Hansford has served as the team's primary setter and gets 8.97 aps. Freshman Maddie Mosier also has seven aces on the season and averages 1.83 kps. She is the team's third leading blocker with 28 this season. Haylee Gregory leads the team on the block with 31, though Paula Okrutna is just behind her with 30. Jordan Rehm, the Gorilla's libero, leads the team in digs with 5.11 dps.

    The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the crash happened on September 18th, 2018 around 7:30 a.m. about 1/2 mile east of Carthage. According to the report, 66-year-old Mark Brewer was driving a Toyota Camry on E.Chestnut St. when he rear-ended a John Deer tractor. The tractor ran off the right side of the roadway. Brewer was flown to Mercy Hospital in Springfield where he died from his injuries on September 21st. Brewer's passenger, Julie Winter, was taken to Mercy Hospita...
