Missouri Southern & Joplin Sports Authority submit 11 NCAA Division II Bid Proposals

MissouriSouthern State University, working in cooperation with the Joplin SportsAuthority, the regional sports commission for the Joplin area, has submitted atotal of 11 bid proposals to the NCAA for future NCAA Division II championshipevents.

MissouriSouthern State University Athletic Director Jared Bruggeman said the focus wasto secure and bring events to Joplin that have a history with MissouriSouthern.

"It wasimportant for us to focus on events that Missouri Southern has hosted in thepast successfully and events that will benefit our athletic department, as wellas have a positive impact on our community and region," Bruggeman said."I believe our facilities in these sports are among the best in thecountry and we have shown in the past that Southern can be a great destinationfor NCAA Championship events."

Among the bidproposals submitted prior to the NCAA Sept. 16 deadline were: NCAA Division IICross Country National Championships for 2014-2015, 2015-2016, 2016-2017 and2017-2018, NCAA Division II Regional Cross Country Championships for 2014-2015,2015-2016, 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 and NCAA Division II Men's Golf Regional for2015-2016, 2016-2017 and 2017-2018.

MissouriSouthern has hosted the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships threetimes, 1999, 2007 and 2012. In 2007, Twin Hills Golf and Country Club was thehost course when Missouri Southern played host for the NCAA Division II Men'sGolf Super Regional.

"Intheir own words, the NCAA made an unprecedented move to open for bidchampionship and regional championships for Division I, Division II andDivision III athletics in 23 sports," said Craig Hull, director of theJoplin Sports Authority. "The opportunity to bid upon and secure thesechampionships is possible thanks to collaboration and cooperation of MissouriSouthern State University athletics.

"Theirtime, effort and hard work will have a positive impact on the local andregional economy and it is important that the local community understand whatMissouri Southern does for the local economy by bringing so many events, teams,athletes and visitors into Joplin. In return, the Joplin Sports Authority andcommunity should support Missouri Southern for these efforts."

The bidproposal timeline included an August 9, 2013 deadline to submit letters ofintent to bid, a September 16, 2013 deadline for all bid proposals and aDecember 2013 deadline for the NCAA to award site selection for all events.

    Crews Battle Vehicle Fire On Highway 69

    The Cherokee Township, Weir, and Galena Fire Departments fought a vehicle fire today (May 25) around 7:30 p.m. on Highway 69 near Highway 103. According to authorities a truck was heading south on 69 Highway when the vehicle started smoking. The truck was then completely engulfed by flames. The driver managed to escape the vehicle without any serious injury. Crews had the fire put out by 8:00 p.m. No word yet on what caused the truck to catch on fire.More >>
