Girard receives $750k to help with road repairs; Weir gets $700k

Updated:

Two Southeast Kansas cities will receive funding for major road repairs.

Both Girard and Weir will be part of the Kansas Department of Transportation's "Geometric Improvement Program" for the fiscal year of 2016.  The Kansas Secretary of Transportation made the announcement in Girard on Friday.

The program is aimed at improving intersections and address any road deficiencies.

Girard Mayor Kurt Ziegler says the city needs the funding now more than ever.

"Elated, because we applied several times and we all know with budget cuts and the way things are with the current economy to get a grant is getting to be more and more pursued," says Mayor Ziegler.

Through the program, Girard will receive $750,000 to go towards road improvements.

Weir will receive $700,000.
