PSU to drop bachelor programs for Spanish and French

Updated:

Pittsburg State will no longer be offering Bachelor of Arts degrees in Spanish and French.

Officials say the change is the result of low interest in the programs.

Officials with the university say students already enrolled in the Spanish and French programs will be allowed to finish those degrees, but no additional students will be allowed to declare a major in either.

"It could be that minors are enough, it could be that we go with undergraduate certificate programs to credential students in languages, or it could be that we decide to create a comprehensive major, for example a Bachelor of Arts in Modern Language with tracts in Spanish and tracts in French," says Karl Kunkel, the Dean of College of Arts and Sciences.

PSU officials say that as early as 2009 the B.A. programs in Spanish and French were having difficulty reaching the minimum enrollment or completion numbers set by the Kansas Board of Regents.
