MSSU's Buerk, NWMSU's Lowell named MIAA Golf Athletes of the Week

Missouri Southern's Ryan Buerk was named the MIAA Men's Golf Athlete of the Week while Northwest Missouri's Cassie Lowell was named the MIAA Women's Golf Athlete of the Week.

Ryan Buerk, Missouri Southern

Buerk finished fourth and helped the Lions to a fifth-place team finish at the 2013 Texoma Championship at Chickasaw Pointe Golf Resort in Kingston, Oklahoma.  Buerk shot the low-round of the tournament with a two-under 70 in his second 18 holes on day one. Overall he finished fourth, just seven strokes off of the lead. The 6-0 junior is a native of Blue Springs, Mo. where he competed at Blue Springs High School.

MIAA Women's Golf Athlete of the Week
Cassie Lowell, Northwest Missouri

Lowell finished second at the Nebraska-Kearney Women's Fall Classic this week. Lowell tied for the individual title but fell in a one-hole playoff. Northwest finished second in the event, placing four in the top-10. Lowell had rounds of75 and 81 to lead the Bearcats. The senior is a native of Concordia, Kans. where she competed at Concordia High School.

Others nominated: Katelyn Haschke, Nebraska-Kearney.

    Suspect in Galena Arson Pleads Guilty

    A Galena, Kansas man pleads guilty to two arsons from the spring and summer. Ronny Ray Piercefield admits that he set a grass fire on North Jefferson Street in Galena in March. That fire eventually engulfed a small structure. Piercefield also pleaded guilty to setting a fire that engulfed 68 bales of hay in rural Cherokee County, Kansas in July of 2018.   • Police Release More Information Regarding Pittsburg Shooting

    The Pittsburg Police Department is searching for a suspect in a weekend shooting. Police say Eric James Cravey is wanted in the Saturday shooting that injured Vanessa Rae McWhirt-Martin of Chetopa, KS. Authorities say McWhirt was a passenger in a black "Dodge Nitro" driven by Cravey. They say witnesses say she got out of the SUV during an argument with Cravey and was shot with a handgun.  McWhirt was taken to the hospital for emergency surgery. At last repo...More >>

    Police identified the victim in a  shooting Saturday afternoon in Pittsburg  as 37 year old Vanessa Rae McWhirt-Martin of Chetopa, Kansas.
