Federal shutdown affects Missouri National Guard

Updated: Oct 2, 2013 05:08 PM

The federal government shutdown is affecting the Missouri National Guard.  Some Guard employees work only under the state Guard.  Others are federal technicians, who work with the Missouri National Guard.

70 percent of the federal technicians are on furlough, while 30 percent have gotten approval to work through the shutdown.  The Guard also has 11,500 citizen-soldiers and airmen, who will remain mission ready.

But upcoming training sessions have been put on hold.

"For our federal technician force, the percentage of them that are getting furloughed, this is a difficult time.  Especially when you take into consideration that all of them just did 6 days without pay.  They were furloughed for 6 days at the end of the fiscal year 2013," says Major Tamara Spicer with the Missouri National Guard.
