Kansas Cross Country to Host Rim Rock Classic Saturday

One of the nation's most popular cross country courses will beshowcased this weekend in Lawrence when the Kansas men's and women's teams hostthe Rim Rock Classic Saturday morning. The men will kick things off at theJayhawks' home course, Rim Rock Farm, with the 8K race at 9 a.m., while thestarting gun for the women's 6K is set to go off at 10 a.m.

 

Both teams are coming off victories in the season's openingmeet, the Bob Timmons Classic (Aug. 31.), but will be tested with some stiffcompetition as they will go up against several highly-touted teams such as theNo. 16 Michigan women, Kansas State, New Mexico State and the Rice men.

 

The KU men had a strong showing to kick off the year and hope tocontinue their early success. Freshman Tyler Yunk was the winner of the racebut the Jayhawks had six top-25 finishers on the day, most of whom wereunderclassmen. This weekend the young Jayhawks will be joined by veterans thelikes of senior Josh Munsch and juniors Reid Buchanan, Evan Landes and JamesWilson all of whom will be making their 2013 season debuts. At last year'sinaugural Rim Rock Farm Classic in 2012, those four Jayhawks were among thevictorious men's team's top-six finishers and will look to duplicate thateffort Saturday.

 

The Jayhawk women also had an impressive start to the season asthey had six top-10 finishers at the Bob Timmons Classic last month. FreshmanJennifer Angles led the way for KU finishing second overall in her firstcollegiate race. Saturday's meet will be the debut for Natalie Becker in hersenior campaign as well as the KU women's top returner from the 2012 season,Hannah Richardson. Both Jayhawks will be expecting high finishes as to leadtheir young squad to its second win of the year.

 

The Kansas women are expected to field 13 underclassmen in theirrace Saturday which includes Angles, and Bob Timmons third- and fourth-placefinishers Grace Morgan and Lydia Saggau. Kansas will need top performances fromall if they are to contend with the national ranked squad out of Michigan, whichwon the Rim Rock Classic a year ago.

The Jayhawks will return toaction on Saturday, Oct. 19 for their first road meet of the year, the ISUPre-National Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind. The meet is slated to begin at11 a.m., and will feature many of the top cross country squads in the nation.
