Southern soccer hosts Lindenwood Sunday at noon

The MissouriSouthern Lions soccer teams looks to rebound from a defeat in their last outinghosting the Lindenwood Lady Lions on Sunday at noon at Hal Bodon Field.

The Lions(2-4-2, 1-1-2 MIAA) would play a 1-1 draw at Fort Hays State lastFriday as junior forward KatelynRoberson would score the game-tying goal in the 77th minute to notch herteam-leading third goal of the year as sophomore forward KarleyThomas would register her team-leading fifth assist on the season. OnSunday, Southern would fall 4-1 at Nebraska-Kearney as senior forward TiffanyLaughlin would score the Lions' goal in the 45th minute as sophomoredefender MichaelaAltvater picked up the assist.

Halfwaythrough the season, Laughlin leads the Lions with 15 shots, including six ongoal. Sophomore defender KimmyHulse has a 1.000 shot on goal percentage as all five of her shots havebeen on goal. Goalkeepers AbbyRisner and BethHammons have combined to make 46 saves with a .793 save percentage.

AboutLindenwood:The Lady Lions enter Sunday's match with a 7-2 overall record whilegetting out to a perfect 4-0 start to MIAA play. Lindenwood plays at Division ISoutheast Missouri on Friday before traveling to Joplin. The Lady Lions havebeen lead in scoring on the year by freshman midfielder Kat Roe who has fivegoals and an assist on the year. Senior goalkeeper Bailey Tracy has played allnine games in net making 51 saves for a .895 save percentage while securingfive shutouts on the season. Outscoring their opponents 19-6 on the year,Lindenwood has won three of their four MIAA contests in extra time asthey defeated Northwest Missouri in overtime and last weekend beat NortheasternState in double overtime and Central Oklahoma in overtime at home.

Led byninth-year head coach Laurie Kaminski, Lindenwood went 5-11-1, 1-10 in theirfirst year in the MIAA last fall. Southern leads the overall series with theLady Lions 2-0 taking their only two matchups the last two years.Southern defeated Lindenwood 3-0 at home in 2011 as Roberson wouldscore the Lions third goal of the afternoon as senior forward KellyWhite would register an assist on the play. The Lions would beat Lindenwood6-3 last fall in St. Charles as Laughlin and Roberson would score the first andfinal goals of the afternoon, respectively.

    Crews Battle Vehicle Fire On Highway 69

    The Cherokee Township, Weir, and Galena Fire Departments fought a vehicle fire today (May 25) around 7:30 p.m. on Highway 69 near Highway 103. According to authorities a truck was heading south on 69 Highway when the vehicle started smoking. The truck was then completely engulfed by flames. The driver managed to escape the vehicle without any serious injury. Crews had the fire put out by 8:00 p.m. No word yet on what caused the truck to catch on fire.More >>
