Missouri State Parks welcome fall visitors

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Fall is a great time to experience Missouri and Missouri State Parks remain open to welcome visitors. All state park facilities, including 40 campgrounds, remain fully operational. With 87 state parks and historic sites around the state, there is always one nearby for camping, hiking, boating or picnicking. You can also experience Missouri’s history with home tours of famous Missourians, Civil War battlefields, and covered bridges.

“October is a perfect time to visit Missouri state parks and historic sites, with the many programs and special events we have planned,” said Missouri State Parks Director Bill Bryan. “From fishing derbies and fall festivals to our many interpretive programs, state parks have something for everyone, including some of the best places in Missouri to see nature’s parade of fall colors. Missouri State Parks have everything you need for a fall trip to remember.”

Many state parks are located on lakes and offer easy access to water activities at Lake of the Ozarks, Table Rock Lake, Stockton Lake, Pomme de Terre Lake, Truman Lake, Long Branch Lake, Mark Twain Lake and Lake Wappapello.

State parks campgrounds offer a variety of amenities ranging from basic campsites for tent campers to campsites with sewer/electric/water hookups for recreational vehicles. Campgrounds offer hot showers, laundry facilities, dump stations and other amenities. Campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis or can be reserved in advance.

Fall also offers a great opportunity to log miles as a part of the Governor’s 100 Missouri Miles challenge. To celebrate Missouri’s distinction as the “Best Trails State” by American Trails and to encourage Missourians to enjoy the outdoors, Gov. Jay Nixon and First Lady Georganne Nixon are inviting Missourians to join them in completing 100 Missouri Miles of outdoor physical activity by the end of the year.
