Pittsburg students get first-hand look of dangers of kitchen fires

Updated:

Some Pittsburg grade school students got an up close and personal look at the dangers of kitchen fires on Tuesday.

The fire department set up demonstrations in the parking lots of five different schools.

That gave students the chance to learn how they can protect themselves from possible danger.

"The little children, we would actually talk about kitchen fire safety in a lot of different ways, we would talk about staying three feet away from the stove and keeping yourself away from that heat source, we didn't deal as directly about the actual fires during the weekly process for the younger children," says Pittsburg Fire Chief Mike Simons.

Experts say nearly 165,000 cooking fires occur in U.S. homes every year and it's never to early to warn kids about the dangers and the proper response.
