Update on storm shelter construction in the Joplin School District

The Joplin School district is working to put more storm shelters in schools across the city.

Four new locations were proposed to the school board on Wednesday morning.

Joplin Schools plans to construct 14 community safe rooms throughout the district.

All safe rooms will serve a dual purpose - they will be gymnasiums that are also community storm shelters.

"We envision it being used extensively in the evenings for youth basketball, school wide assemblies, Christmas programs, large assemblies, in addition to the community safe rooms," says Mike Johnson, the Director of Construction for Joplin Schools.

The goal is to have all community safe rooms completed by the coming spring, except for the community safe room at Joplin High.  That one will be completed in August 2014 when the school is scheduled to open.
