Softball to host Elementary & Secondary Academies starting Nov. 3

The MissouriSouthern State Softball program will host both Elementaryand Secondary Academies this winter for grades 1-12. The Elementaryacademy will be for players in grades 1-7, while the Secondaryacademy will be for players in grades 8-12. Elementary academy dateswill be on November 3, 10, 17 and 24, while Secondary Academy dates willbe on December 1, 15, 22 and 29.

The MissouriSouthern State University Softball Academy wil give student athletes theopportunity to develop their hitting, pitching or catching skills in a costeffective manner. Players will receive instruction on the skill of powerhitting and bunting. The Hitting instruction will be led by Missouri SouthernState University head coach, Bill Gray. Pitchers will be instructed in legdrive, arm speed, wrist snap and total pitch development. Pitching instructionwill be led by assistant MSSU coach Nicole Hudson. Catchers will be instructedon framing, blocking and throwing skills. Instruction will be led by members ofthe MSSU softball team.

ElementaryAcademy:The Elementary Academy is for all softball players in grades 1-7. The one-hoursessions will break down the basic skills of hitting, pitching or catching.Hitters will learn the importance of stance, balance and swing mechanics.Pitchers will work on generating power and accuracy. Catching will emphasizeblocking, framing and throw downs.

SecondaryAcademy:The Secondary Academy is for all softball players in grades 8-12. No exceptionswill be made. The one-hour sessions will break down the skill of hitting fromstance, balance and swing mechanics at a more competitive level. The highschool athlete will be given instruction on the intricacies of the skill ofhitting including: hitting to the opposite field, hitting for power versusaverage, and the understanding of having a strategy before stepping into thebatter's box. Pitching will emphasize the movement of the four primary pitchesin the game of fastpitch. Emphasis will also be placed on change of speed.Catching will emphasize blocking, framing, throw downs and keys to calling agame from behind the plate.

Each of thefour dates will feature three one-hour sessions of hitting and pitchingstarting at 1, 2 & 3 p.m. In addition, there will be twoone-hour catching sessions at 1 and 2 p.m. Players may participate in onehitting, one pitching and one catching session per week. Each session costs$20. Players that sign up for the whole-four week session will receive a $10discount, while players that sign up for multiple sessions in one day willreceive a $5 discount. Each session is limited to 12 players persession to insure individual attention.
