44th Annual Columbus Day Festival kicks off

The 44th Annual Columbus Day Festival kicked off Friday in Columbus, Kansas.

Friday's events included a scarecrow contest, the bean feed and a quilt show.

A new event to the festival - Smokin' On The Square, Rib-Stock 2013 - kicked off Friday evening.  Four categories of meat - chicken, pork ribs, pork, and beef brisket will be judged and the chef with the best BBQ will win a prize.

There's also a hot air balloon glow Friday evening, weather permitting.

"We always hope the weather cooperates with us so they can go up," says Columbus resident  Betty Zwahlen.  "They are beautiful to watch and the young kids enjoy them.  The little ones stand there in awe of the balloons."

Columbus Days continues through Sunday.  For a full list of festival events visit http://www.columbusdayballoons.com/schedule.html
