Press Release PSU:

Practice officially began for the 2013-13 Pittsburg State women's basketball season on Tuesday, October 15. Head Coach Lane Lord's squad opened their first official practice at 3:30 p.m.

The Gorillas return eight players from their 17-10 2012-13 season and add eight newcomers. All eight of Pitt State's returners have seen starting time in their careers.

The top returner is junior All-American Lizzy Jeronimus. Last season Jeronimus led Pitt State and the MIAA with 18.4 points per game. She also contributed 6.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. Morgan Westhoff was the team's second-leading scorer a year ago with 8.7 ppg and led the team with 46 threes made and a .400 three-point shotting percentage. Senior guard Alexa Bordewick is third on Pitt State's career three-point shooting list and brings 6.1 ppg to the court. Hailey Roderique started each of the frist 14 games and recorded a double-double before succumbing to a season-ending injury in December. Junior Brigit Hesser and senior Y'Cedria Devers each started eight games last season and have been significant contributors at the guard position. Hesser sees the court and moves the ball well, while Devers is very athletic and a tenacious defender. Cathy Brugman and Kylie Gafford are both strong players down low that can also step out and shoot. They will each look to play bigger roles this season.

Twin guards Garrett and Ashli Burton redshirted their first year at Pitt State and will see court time for the first time in their collegiate careers. Alex Muff played four years of Division I volleyball at Kansas State and has enrolled in graduate school at Pittsburg State and will add a strong presence down low for the Gorillas. She is the daughter of head men's basketball coach, Kevin Muff. Antqunita Reed is an extremely athletic junior guard who transferred from St. Petersburg College in Florida.

In addition to the four redshirt and transfer players, the Gorillas add four true freshmen: 6-0 forward Tamiaya Henderson (Mt. Vernon, Mo.), 5-10 guard Paige Lungwitz (Maize, Kan.), 5-6 guard Haydn Herlocker (Girard, Kan.) and 5-11 forward Deja Snell (Frisco, Texas).

The Gorillas will play exhibition games against Nebraska and Kansas before opening the regular season at the Disney Tipoff Classic in Anaheim, Calif. Pitt State will play its home opener on November 14 against Henderson State. The team will play non-conference games against Minnesota-Duluth, William Jewell, Northwest Missouri and Quincy before opening the conference potion of the season at Northwest Missouri onDecember 5. After fall semester finals the Gorillas will host former MIAA foe Truman  and the conference home opener against Southwest Baptist before the holiday break. The New Year opens on the road against Lindenwood and Lincoln. The regular season battle through the conference will lead to the MIAA Tournament which begins with first round games on campus sites for the fifth through 12th place finishers in the league onMonday, March 3. The winners will move on to face the top four teams in the league in Kansas City beginning Thursday, March 6. NCAA Regionals begin March 14 with the tournament culminating at the Elite Eight beginning March 25 at Erie Insurance Arena in Erie, Pa.
